What figure of speech is it when someone greets another person by saying “greetings”? Instead of using words (“hello,” “good day”) to greet the person, you inform them of the category under which your words would have fallen, had you used them. Seems kind of disingenuous to me.
It would be as if you consoled a grieving person simply by saying “condoleances.” Oh wait: people do say “condoleances.” Actually, they say “MY condoleances.” Because they want to get credit for saying it.
